Having a plugged sink or shower can be highly annoying, but what is your go-to solution? Many will go and pull out a bottle of drain chemicals and pour it down the drain, but is this really the best solution? Well, there are some differing opinions on this subject, but in reality, you are better off leaving the drain chemicals on the shelf. There are many possible side effects of drain chemicals that are less than desirable.
For example, they can damage your pipes. While some of them are listed as being safe for your pipes, the chemicals used are not harmless. They usually contain some type of acid that will corrode your pipes, even if it is just a little bit. The fumes can also be dangerous for your health, and the chemicals can damage your septic system. So what is a better alternative?
Using a plunger can be very efficient, and while you should be careful with the pressure applied so you don’t damage your pipes, you have control over that aspect. You could also purchase a snake. While a short snake won’t get any of the clogs that are far down the drain, it can make it into the p-trap of your sink which is the most common spot for a clog to form.
